| So last spring, here we were in Knoxville, trying to get our ducks in a row when we realized it was a chicken festival and who wants to show up with the wrong meat? (Well, us…) But it was too late; time had passed us by like an overthrown disc, and we missed the window, hitting the wall instead. Dang. Fortunately some Swamp Donkeys from down south were migrating north, so as many as could fit rode them to Versailles for the tourney. One car took a wrong turn in Cincinnati that evening and had to stop into a casino for directions. Seven hours later, around 5:30 a.m., we got it figured out and continued on our way. The rest of the team did not get lost, though we did lose one Sunday. “Nobody came to wake me up”. Spoken like a true college student.
So anyway, we’ve come to this tournament for 20-some years to work our magic, bring our spirit to the games, and share in the festivities and hijinks. We managed to do so last year, in a smaller contingent, despite being a bunch of knuckleheads and missing the bid deadline. But this year, we seek to return in full force, flying our own colors, and once again stake the “Voodoo” sign at the base of The Hill! |
| Team History:
| "[Above] is a letter written by one of the current organizers of Knoxville Ultimate. As you can read for yourself, this new generation of Knoxville Ultimate players are building their own history of crazy Poultry Days stories for themselves (and, they seem to speak in code). Although pretty much every aspect of Knoxville Ultimate has been passed along to this new generation, the timeliness of a PD bid and the importance of Poultry Days and it’s importance to Knoxville Ultimate and to Versailles was apparently not passed along successfully last year. These newbies have taken what we have built upon over 20+ years and taken Knoxville Ultimate to new levels. They have organized leagues over the past 3 or 4 years, and have successfully run our long running summer tournament, SMUT (Smoky Mountain Ultimate Tournament). The originators of SMUT, as well as the individuals that used to travel so regularly to Poultry Days have retired, moved away, or just plain gotten too old to play. But, rest assured, the people submitting this bid ARE the folks that have taken the torch that I and others have respectively passed to them, and are making us all proud. Although I still play fairly regularly, I am no longer involved in scheduling, cones, water, running tournaments, web site….. These folks are, and have never hesitated to let an old man like myself participate with them. They embody the very spirit of friendship and positivity that made Knoxville Ultimate so special to me and to others. The torch has been passed: these guys are keeping it lit, and in fact have fanned the flames to new heights. Please accept them into Poultry Days. They even said I could play with them (of course!) and I’m going to make every effort to make the trip this year.
